Post #27 - The Wounded Heart by Dr. Dan Allender

I read this book 3 years ago and drafted this blog post back then.  At first I was going to just take the book back to the library when I realized it's written from a Christian perspective and is filled with God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, etc.  However, I thought I'd give it a chance and I'm glad I did.  Here's some things I gleaned from this book.  I especially like that the author talks about the homes where abuse occurs.

From Chapter Four: The War Zone; Strategies for Abuse

Few abuse victims come from happy, so-called normal homes, even if the appearance is enviable to outsiders who do not know the inner workings of the family.  Many times the typical home where abuse occurs and is not reported is relationally distant and empty.  The variations of the pattern are many, but the fact remains that legitimate, healthy intimacy is rare or nonexistent in abusive homes.  The environment is a breeding ground for deep soul hunger.

Many abuse victims are prone to deny the shortcomings of their own homes.  The most obvious reason is that whatever was typical is viewed as normal.  Chances are, however, that the two factors that are essential to a happy home were absent in the victim’s.  The first factor is a sense of being enjoyed for who one is rather than for what one does.  Many abuse victims were enjoyed for being the adultified child, but that kind of appreciation leaves the hungry heart untouched.  A second factor is a respect of one’s being that permits the opportunity to develop uniqueness and separateness from other members of the family.

The role confusion is further complicated by repeated violations of the child’s boundaries and individual rights.  Boundaries are appropriate lines that rightfully separate one’s inner and outer world from the domain of others.  They provide a sense of uniqueness and independence and help a person orient who he or she is in contrast to who others are.

So far the home of the victim has produced relational hunger, a sense of being needed but nevertheless demeaned, while making it difficult for the child to trust her perceptions and feelings.  The atmosphere is also demanding, conservative and rule-bound.  The highest family value is loyalty: always faithful, no matter the cost, to protect the family from attack and shame.

The scene is set for abuse.  The child is (to some degree) empty, alone, committed to pleasing, boundary-less, burdened, and bound to a family or a parent whose desire becomes the bread of hope for the hungry child.  The two key words are empty and dependent.   The child is also psychologically intertwined in the push and pull of the parent’s every offer or refusal to provide nurturing and support.
Many factors influence personality, but the central organizing theme in a dysfunctional family will be how to deaden the pain of soul hunger, while remaining sufficiently alert and predisposed to act in one’s own best interest.  Soul deadness – or a heart dulled to its own pain – and a hypervigilant, poised alertness are not compatible partners in the dance of life.  In order to live inherent contradiction, the child must develop a split between the two (or more) antithetical positions, thus existing as two different people; an inner person who quietly and unobtrusively stores what is most precious away from the sight of a dangerous world; and a public person who adopts the manner, dress, voice, and face that others who distribute the bounty of life expect to be displayed.  If Dad expects me to be a good student, I will perform to his desire (if possible); the reward will be an occasional smile, or perhaps a free night to spend with my friends.

The child is caught in a wretched dilemma.   Survival means fitting in, and to fit in means to live a life of torment.  The experience of being profoundly used and let down by someone we trusted and relied on sears the hope that relationship can be purely enjoyed.
The effect of sensual contact (cuddling nourishes their young souls in a different way than play or normal physical contact) on the child who has lived much of his or her life without nourishing touch is equivalent to watering a flower that has been left without water for days.  The drooping stem straightens and the closed bud opens; the lifeless plant brightens into the glory that it was meant to reveal.  So with the heart of the hungry child; the warmth lifts her face, and the nourishment brings hope to her eyes.  The memories of this stage are hard for the abuse victim to recall without an awful combination of shame and confusion.  A child isn’t as sure as an adult when touch by another is inappropriate, but she does sense that something is ‘weird.’  Her sense of discomfort, however, is clouded by the thrill of being cared for.  Seduction desensitizes a child over time so that she doesn’t recognize abusive progression.
‘Why did I allow myself to trust?  Why did I allow myself to want a man who would (or did) abuse me?”
The child will not see the touch as a choice, as clearly as an adult might, especially if she has been locked in sensual isolation for years, hungry of soul for contact, unsure of her own right to boundaries, and doubtful of her own intuitive judgment.

From Chapter Six: Betrayal
The betrayal has three levels: the failure of the family to nourish the child prior to the abuse, the traitorous act of the perpetrator, and the lack of protection offered by the nonoffending parent(s).  The lack of appropriate relational nourishment is the necessary soil in which the weeds of abuse may flourish.  A healthy environment in which children are respected and treated with sensitivity  and compassion rarely produces abuse.  It is impossible to use someone you love.  The desire to posses or subjugate - the hunger to repay or destroy - is the ground for abuse.

A parent does not need to know about or suspect sexual abuse to betray a child.  A third form of nonoffending  betrayal comes as a result of the victim having no place to turn once abuse has occurred because of the parent's character weakness.

Post #26 - Fighting to stay alive

I have dealt with depression off and on over the years.   Sometimes it's pretty bad, sometimes it's not even a thought.  The past few years, it happens more often.  Today is one of those days.   Usually, I don't mention it to anyone,  but I decided today to write while I'm in the middle of it.  There have been a couple of times in the past couple of years, where it was so bad,  that I called a couple of people and asked them to check on  me the next morning to see if I was still among the living. Suicide has been a constant companion for many years.  It sounds strange, but it is comforting to me to know that I can end everything.  This morning was one of those mornings where nothing really seemed worth it.  It took all I had to get out of my car and start walking at Green Mtn.  Even after I started,  I almost turned around.  I knew, tho, that if I kept going I'd start to feel a little better.  I walked parts I usually run, because I just didn't have the fortitude to run.  I did eventually start slowly running.  As per usual, running helps and I start to feel better.  Running has always been a life saver for me.  Had I not discovered it in college, I'd probably be dead.  I'm positive it has saved my life numerous times.  Even after I got home today, tho, I've been crying.   I just don't know where to turn.  I have thought about selling my house and most of my crap and hitting the road.  Then, the logical side of me takes over and says "who does that at age 54?"  And then the other side of me says, "well, it may save your life and why not?"   Alot of time, when I feel like this,  I get a feeling in my stomach as if I need to vomit, although I'm not physically sick.  It's just as if something needs to come out.  I'd like to be dating someone, however, that's tough to do, it seems, when in the mid-50's.  People, including me, are so set in their ways, that it's difficult to find compromise.   Plus, I find most people don't want to (or are unable to) discuss the 'hard' things in life.  And, to be honest, trust is an issue for me.  Add all of this and a whole plethora of other things and there just doesn't seem to be a way out (or through).  The current political climate in this country has increased my depression as well.  It seems our country has regressed at least 70 years.  To me, the future isn't as bright.  As a kid and young adult, I thought life and 'things' would just get better and better.  Hasn't seemed to happen that way.  I never imagined I would be in the situation I am in and have been in for a few years.  For the past few New Year's Eve's, I think that the next year I'll make a drastic change.  So  far, I haven't had the guts or I get too depressed to make a change.  From a very young age, I have been so responsible. Growing up, I made breakfast for my parents (when I was in high school - what high schooler does that?), I never got into trouble, was valedictorian, didn't drink, didn't break the rules (of which there were many), went to church, didn't swear, didn't disobey, was polite and couldn't tell anyone of my angst.  I still feel I can't tell anyone my angst, except someone I pay to listen to me.  Since graduating from  college, I have been financially self-sufficient.  I have had zero (ZERO) help from anyone - even when I was married, my husband didn't help much.  In fact, when he left, I had huge long-distance phone bills to pay or risk hurting my credit.

...to be continued....

Post #25 - Searching for people who are accountable

Yesterday, I consulted with a lawyer for an opinion regarding a consulting agreement I have with a client.  I had left him a message earlier in the day.  He called back and after I gave him more details, he started talking and the more he talked the angrier he got.  At one point, he swore - not at me in particular, but in regards to what I might say to the client.  I was confused by his anger and not sure where it was coming from.  I decided to ask him about his anger, so I said "I find it interesting that you're getting angry about this."   This riled him up even more, it seemed.  He went off on how he was doing me a favor by returning my phone call and giving me free advice.  He then said I could pay him a retainer and told me his hourly rate.   I never cease to be amazed that people do things and then don't take responsibility for what they do?  It's not like someone had a gun pointed to his head and forced him to call and talk to me.

I  wonder what the world would be like if people took responsibility for their choices, words and actions?  Hmmmm......

Post #24 - Some thoughts on love.

I've been thinking a lot lately (past few months or so) about love and what the hell that really is.  I don't think I've ever actually experienced true love.  Not the emotional kind anyway.  Growing up I never heard the words 'I love you' from my parents or anyone else for that matter.  I had a nasty uncle who teased me relentlessly (Uncle Leonard Beeson, whom I hope is rotting in hell) and when I complained to Eleanor about his teasing she told me he teased me because he 'liked' me.  Really?  That never made sense to me.   Why would someone who supposedly 'liked' me, treat me so viciously (teased me until I cried - see earlier blog post)?  I never experienced hunger and I always had clothes to wear.  Wasn't ever beaten,  however, to me that is 'easy' love.  That's the kind of 'love' you provide when you don't want the neighbors to talk or social services to show-up at your door.  'Real' love isn't really tangible.  It can't really be seen, although it can be demonstrated by hugs & affection.  To me, it's when someone takes the time to really get to know you.  They allow you to express your opinions, disagree, etc and they have meaningful conversation with you.  They know your likes, dislikes, your fears and your aspirations.  You are seen and heard.  Growing up, if I expressed my opinions or disagreed, it was either met with silence (because some things can't be talked about) or I was punished for disobeying.  I think that's why the word 'love' is so confusing to me.  The first time I heard 'I love you' from Eleanor was when I left for college (18 years old).  Since then, she has said it many times, as did my Dad, however, to me it's just a word they said, because neither of them backed it up with action.  Eleanor will tell you (and me) that she loves me, however, she continues to hang around my brother and has chosen him over me.  'Love' rings very hollow, when it has strings attached and/or nothing to substantiate it.  I found this story when googling 'love':

A little girl was invited for dinner at the home of her first-grade friend. The vegetable was buttered broccoli and the mother asked if she liked it. “Oh, yes,” the child replied politely, “I love it!”

But when the bowl of broccoli was passed, she declined to take any. The hostess said, “I thought you said you loved broccoli.” The girl replied sweetly, “Oh, yes ma’am, I do, but not enough to eat it!”

That's the kind of love I was raised with.  Love in word, but not deed.

Post #23 - Searching for people of integrity

And by people of integrity, I mean people that do what  they say they are going to do, people who keep their word.  There have been a lot of people who have come into  my life who don't do what they say they'll do.  Here's some recent examples:

1).  I called RT as a colleague suggested he may want some assistance with his business.  After no reply from a couple of emails that I sent him, I called and left a message.  He called back on a Monday morning.  He seemed distracted,  mentioned something about how he was just back from vacation and that he would call me either later that afternoon or the next morning.  Never heard from him.

2).  LE told 6 of us that she would contact a local non-profit, the Executive Director and the BOD, to see if we could get on the BOD agenda.  The plan was to start a speaker's bureau and coordinate speaking opportunities for CSA.  She never contacted the non-profit - said she would do this in January 2017.

3).  KL and I had plans to climb a peak last weekend (Monday, July 3rd).  KL was out of town on Sat & Sun at his parent's house as his brother, sister-in-law and niece were in town from Montana, but he said Monday would be good.  I sent him a text on Sunday afternoon asking him what peak we were climbing the next day, as we had discussed quite a few.  I didn't hear back that eve, as I went to bed early.  When I got up on Monday, he said he was staying at his parent's as his Dad wanted him to help trim some trees.

I don't know why people don't do what they say they are going to do?  I find it very frustrating, disappointing and disrespectful.   One time and I don't trust that person anymore.

When I said I never meant to hurt you, that's a lie.  I knew what I did hurt you and it didn't stop me. I did it anyway, because I wanted what I wanted.  I knew it would change your life and it didn't stop me and it's a sin.  I did a conscious act that I knew would traumatize your life and it did not stop me.   I knew your life would pay the consequences for what I wanted and it didn't stop me.  I  knew the wound would be deep in your life, but it didn't stop me.  It was a conscious act that served me and destroyed  you.   It wasn't a booboo, it wasn't a bummer.  It was a sin.  I've sinned against you.  And  I own it and I'm asking for your forgiveness.  (That begins healing.)

After my weird ass dream and email to myself on March 9th,  I was so freaked out and disconcerted that I decided to go see a psychic.  I  had never been to a psychic before, but I wanted to see if there was something  this dream/email was trying to tell me.  So,  I googled psychics in the Lakewood area, looked at a few websites and  chose one.  I made an appointment online for that  day - 30 minutes for $40.  Seemed reasonable enough to  me!  I went to see her that afternoon. I  told  her about the dream and the email.  She didn't really have an idea of what the email meant,  but she did say that our 'spirit guides' can send us emails.  I'm still trying to figure out what that email was supposed to be telling me.   She was getting some 'information' from my Dad.  She asked me  if he had died related to something related to his heart.   He died of a heart attack.  She also wanted to see  a picture of Eleanor (the person who gave  birth to me).  She took one look at her (I showed her a picture from Facebook) and she said that she was a hard woman (that's for darn sure!).  She told me that I really didn't belong in this family....that I wasn't like the rest (which, of course, I knew!).  She also told me  that there's a blonde woman in  my life that I need to keep my distance from (ie: limit interaction).  I can only suppose that this is my sister, since she has proven to me time and again that she isn't trustworthy and she lies.  The psychic also told me that there was something about this coming May and Eleanor.  She couldn't really tell what was going to happen, but 'May' and 'Eleanor' were linked.  I didn't walk out with a ton of answers, but  I do think this psychic is legit.  What I really wanted was someone that can see the future.....I know my past!  I don't need anyone to tell me about that stuff!!!   I liked her and would see her again  tho.  I find this stuff fascinating and believe all of us have some 'intuitive' ability.   Some people are just more tapped in to it.  I sorta wish I was.

I never thought I had PTSD.  That was only for war veterans and people with severe, violent trauma. My therapist last fall was the first one to mention PTSD to me, because I have fairly severe reactions to certain people and/or the things they say. Then Trump was elected President.  Every day since his election and especially since he took office, I have had an overwhelming sense of dread and feel powerless.  The executive orders and bills that have been passed rolling back EPA regulations, de-funding Planned Parenthood, removing internet privacy, etc, etc, etc is appalling and I can't hardly take it.  I'm afraid for our planet and can hardly believe how anyone can possibly pass laws that destroy the place we live.  I am so fucking sick of Colorado Congressmen Mike Coffman & Ken Buck.  What losers.  Two-faced assholes. Trump and the Republicans all remind me of my dad, Eleanor and relatives.  It used to be that I could choose to not be around my family, so as to not remind myself of how they threw me under the bus and how racist, bigoted, misogynistic and chauvinistic they are.  Now with Trump, it's in my face every single day,  It used to be just part of my personal, private world, now this shit is on a national scale.  I try to not think about it and go about my day, but I am depressed.  Then I get REALLY angry.  I'm having a difficult time even wanting to do things.  I can't get motivated to do yoga or go running.  All I want to do is move out of the country. I want to be away from this stupidity and ignorance.  My relatives don't believe in global warming, my dad watched Fox news 24/7.  I am now forced to be around my 'relatives' on tv & internet, because Twitler, Cheeto Head, POTUS bully is fucking everywhere and doing stupid fucking things.  Good god.  I've never really been a big fan of alcohol, but Fireball whiskey is a big temptation lately.  I think I could easily become an alcoholic. I don't buy it, but it's scary for me to think & admit this. Definitely points to mental stress & anxiety.  I get so angry and I'm not sure what to do with it. Today, I took a dish towel and hit the kitchen counter top probably 30 times.  Just whipped the shit out of it.

Last Sunday, March 19th, I hiked up Quandary Peak - a 14er.  I've been to the summit of this peak probably 15 times, mainly in the winter.  I hadn't been to the top yet this winter partly due to breaking my wrist and March 19th was my last opportunity to get a winter summit this year.  I didn't decide until that morning and didn't leave my house until around 7:30.  The drive on Hwy 285 was uneventful and driving up Hoosier Pass, I could see folks already halfway up Quandary.  The parking lot was pretty full, but I did find a spot.  I dressed fairly light.  I knew a big group had been up to the summit the day before, so I figured the trail would be well packed, which it was.  I didn't take snowshoes...just Kahtoola microspikes on my running shoes, which I put on at my car.  I took off around 9:30 or so.  It was quite warm.  I had on my light weight liner gloves and a buff around my ears, with my big warm mittens and stocking cap in my pack.  I made good time to treeline and started up the longer climb to the 'bench.'  It was windy, but not bad.   Along the bench, I stopped to put on my stocking cap and big mittens....the wind was fairly strong from the northwest.   I started up the last section towards the summit.  I had passed quite a few people....lots of folks were either on skis or had skis strapped to their packs.  I came upon a guy that had a huge pack and crampons on his boots.  He looked like he was training for something, because a person definitely didn't need all of that for Quandary that day.  I came up next to him and said something like 'you must be training for something?'  There was a bit of hesitation from him, so I thought he either didn't want to share or didn't want to talk, so I was going to let it be.  Then he replied, 'swimming.'   I laughed and said 'good one!'  I got a couple steps ahead and he said 'Everest.'  I stopped in my tracks, turned to him and said 'Really? Wow!'  There was a guy that had stopped on skis and he heard 'Everest' and asked him when he was leaving.  He said he was leaving in 3 days.  I asked him what his name was, so I could follow his progress on Everest.   He said 'Jim Davidson.'  I  thought that name sorta rang a bell and thought of Chris Tomer, the meterologist on Channel 2 in the mornings.  The skier guy and Jim kept talking and I headed on up to the summit.  I hung out on the summit for maybe 10 minutes, sending my friend, Kevin, a text telling him where I was.  With the wind, it was cold just sitting.  I headed back down and saw Jim again.  I said 'good luck to you!' as I passed.  He replied 'thank you.'  I dropped further down the mountain and sat on a rock for probably 20 minutes taking in the sun, beautiful day and elevation.  What a glorious day!  I got back to my car, changed clothes and sent another text to Kevin.  I drove home soooo very happy!  I was happy I had decided to drive to Quandary, even tho I would be alone climbing.  I was happy that I felt good and made good time to the summit. I was happy to be around so many like minded people above treeline.   And I was really happy to have met Jim.  What a gift that few hours was for me.  When I got home I looked Jim up on Facebook and sent him a friend request.   I also saw a photo of he and Chris Tomer from a few days prior on his FB page, so I sent Chris Tomer a friend request  as well. Tomer is an avid mountaineer and trail runner, which is one reason I watch Channel 2 news in the morning.  Jim had posted on FB that he was 'heading uphill' that day, so I replied and said that I had met him that morning on Quandary and that I would be following his progress on Everest.  He replied later that day with 'Thanks for saying Hi Carol.  Have a great spring.'  I find it amazing that this person, Jim, who is headed to Everest and has climbed around the world, is so humble and kind.  I, obviously, don't know him well, but based on his comments and posts on Facebook (we're now friends on FB), this is how he seems.  I think that for some people the adventures, races, mountains, etc that we pursue are lessons in humility.  In part of Jim's post on his blog today (see below), he writes: "that demands you become more." The word 'become' hit me. This is a big word, a verb, an action word, a word that to me, doesn't end.  I am always 'becoming.'  I always want to be learning, growing, reaching & pushing.

Jim Davidson's blog:
http://www.speakingofadventure.com/everest-2017/leaving-for-everest/

He wrote this in his blog today (emphasis mine):
"Its not about “conquering” the mountain. No one can conquer a mountain. Its about taking on a big challenge that demands you do more, that demands you become more."

One of my favorite quotes:

“Mountains are not stadiums where I satisfy my ambition to achieve, they are the cathedrals where I practice my religion…I go to them as humans go to worship. From their lofty summits I view my past, dream of the future and, with an unusual acuity, am allowed to experience the present moment…my vision cleared, my strength renewed. In the mountains I celebrate creation. On each journey I am reborn.” – Anatoli Boukreev

Post #18 - March 21, 2017 (3rd post for today....I'm on a roll!)

I sometimes wonder why people come back into my life.  Is it because I still have lessons to learn that only they can teach me?  About 10 years ago, I met 'MP'.  He is a very athletic person - road bikes, mtn bikes, snowshoes, runs, skis, you name it, he does it.   Back then he was a massage therapist and acupuncturist.  We didn't really date. He was super negative.  I remember one time I was out on my road bike.  Later that day he called me and asked me why I didn't  say 'hi' to him when I was riding. I told him I didn't see him.  He went off on me basically saying I should say 'hi' to everyone that I see when I'm riding!  Really?  I told him if he wanted to talk to me kindly, then fine, otherwise I was hanging up.   I hung-up.  I don't recall talking to him after that until this past December.  He came back into my life because he sent an email for the Sourdough Snowshoe Race that my friend, Kevin, puts on.  I manage the registrations & website for the race.  MP didn't know I would be on the receiving end of the email (I don't think he knew that anyway).  I replied to him and told him it was me, asked him how he was doing, etc.  He had been out of state for a few years working on cruise ships as an acupuncturist.  I thought that maybe in 10 years he had changed and had calmed down (ie: had gotten less caustic).  I saw him about a week before the snowshoe race as a few of us went up to mark the course.  He seemed like maybe he was more mellow, although he did rant about some xc skiers skiing on the side of the road.  Since then he and I have done a few things together, gone to dinner, hiked & gone running.  Clearly he is still the same person that he was....gets all bent out of shape if people don't do what he thinks they should!  It's very strange to me. Who cares if two guys are running without shirts in mid February if it's 50 degrees (and who cares if they are running shirtless no matter what the temp?)?  He went off (just to me - not to the guys that were running) about how come June & July they wouldn't be running very well, because they are running too much now (or something to that effect).  REALLY?  He didn't know these guys...how the fuck can he make those kinds of assumptions?  We went hiking/running at Mt. Galbraith last Friday evening.  We started at the trail head in the neighborhood in Golden (not up Golden Gate Canyon).  There are wooden steps at the beginning of the trail and in some places the wood is missing and only long stakes are sticking up.  It's somewhat hazardous and would be easy to trip on those.  When we came back down, I didn't go down the steps because I didn't want to trip (having recently broken my wrist, falling isn't high on my list), so I ran down the grassy slope right next to the steps.  He went off on me on how I was eroding the hill and that I was just like Trump supporters, because it's all about what I want!  I just laughed at him, but he was serious.  I haven't taken him very seriously since connecting again the past couple of months.  I know he must just be full of anger inside and most people who are as vitriolic as he is, are equally harsh on themselves.  And then we went to hike Rosalie Peak last Saturday.   I didn't think we'd need snowshoes and technically we didn't. I wore my microspikes.  He didn't have any traction device.  I brought my poles and suggested he bring poles as well.  He had poles in his car, but they didn't have cages, so he didn't take them on the hike.  I gave him my poles, because I didn't need them up to the saddle.  With microspikes, I had a lot of traction and was walking on the snow & icy sections.  When we got to the saddle, it looked like the ascent to the top wouldn't be too bad as there were a lot of dry sections.  We crossed a short, snowy section and then he headed for the dry ground and I stayed on the snow as much as possible to the summit.  The summit was awesome...a little windy, but otherwise really nice.  It was a very warm day for sure. We stayed on the summit for maybe 10 minutes and then started down.  I asked him for one of my poles for the descent.  I was ahead of him and headed for the snow.  He followed me and was having a difficult time because of the slope and being on snow.   I headed back up to him to give him my pole, so he would have both and that's when he lit into me.  He went off on how I should do what's best for the team (WTF?).  I can't remember what all he said, because I stopped listening and said 'I'm not listening to this' and headed down with 1 pole across the snow.  I find it very strange that I can choose my own route to the top - go on the snow because that's what worked best for me, but when it comes to descending he follows me onto the snow and somehow that's my fault?!   AND if he didn't want to be on the snow, why the hell didn't he descend to the saddle like how we came up, rather than dropping off the south side which was completely snow!?  I went to the  saddle and saw him slowly making his way thru the snow. It was pretty warm, so I'm sure he was post holing a lot.  When we met up at the trail at around treeline, I didn't say anything to him, nor him to me.  He post holed a lot on the way down.  I did some post holing, but being lighter, not as much as he.  We didn't talk about what happened.  I guess I only have myself to blame if he goes off on me, because I didn't put a stop to it a couple of months ago.  I wonder tho, why someone that turns 55 in a few months acts this way?  IMO, it's very immature and some things really aren't worth getting upset about.  Where is the personal responsibility when it comes to making your own decisions?  Don't most people know by this age that you can't control what other people do or don't do?  I won't be doing anything  with him going forward, unless he agrees to discuss things in a calm & mature manner.  And  I won't listen to him rant about people we don't know doing  things he doesn't like.  At the Rosalie trail head a guy walked past us towards the trail and didn't say 'hi.' Of course, MP had to rant to me about that. It seems so petty to me.  Who the hell cares if someone you don't know says hi or not?  All I can guess, is there is a boiling cauldron of angst and anger in him and it is going to come out one way or another.

On Wednesday night, March 8th,  I had a dream that I was the race director for a snowshoe race.  I have helped my friend Kevin the past few years with his race, which is in January, so it's not completely strange that I would dream about a race.  In my dream, it was race day and I, for some reason, was providing breakfast food for the racers.  I had sandwiches (?).  I had someone helping me, but I don't know who it was.  I didn't think I  had enough food, so the person helping me went and bought a couple dozen  donuts.  There were 2 races distances (like in Kevin's  race) and I was having course issues as well.  The strange part about this whole story is this:  When I go to bed at night I turn my cell phone off and plug it in to charge on my nightstand.  On Thursday morning,  March 9th, I woke-up around 6:00, got up and turned my phone on.  I started making breakfast, turned on my laptop and I heard emails come thru on my phone.   I went and looked at my phone and saw an email to me from me!?  I went to my laptop and this email had 'race' as the subject, nothing in the body of the email and was sent from my phone.  It has this in the body:  "Sent from Yahoo Mail on Android"  It was delivered at 4:40 a.m.

Now for me to send that to myself, I would've had to 1). do this while sleeping, 2). with a cast on my right arm, 3). click ok to send an email without any information in the body of the email, 4).delete the email from my sent folder,  because nothing was in the sent folder on my phone,  and 5). delete the sent email from my trash folder, because nothing was in that folder either.

This was very disconcerting for me.  I have NO idea how this happened.  I do not have a history of sleeping walking or anything like that.  I was so befuddled that I went to see a psychic that afternoon.  I had never been to a psychic.  She didn't have a lot of insight as to what that meant, but she did know things about me and my family that there's no way she could've known without some sort of psychic ability.  I'm still trying to make sense of that dream and email!

On Sunday, Feb 12th,  I was hiking on the Beaver Brook Trail (west end), slipped on a rock and broke my right wrist.  I knew immediately it was broken and I'm fairly certain I heard the snap.  It was excruciatingly painful. I was about 1 1/2 miles from  my car.  I was by myself, however, a couple of hikers were at that same place.  They hiked out with me. The lady carried my poles as I had to cradle my right wrist with my left arm/hand.  I took deep breathes and stopped occasionally to let my stomach settle down.  I also was a much faster hiker than the other two folks, so I waited for them (mainly the lady) just so we were all together.  When we got into cell phone range about 1/2 mile from the trailhead, I called my 'friend' MP, because he knew where  I was.  I asked him if he would come and get me and take me to an emergency room.  His response was 'won't the folks you're with take  you?'   Note to self and everyone else:  If  someone asks you to come and  get them because they've broken a bone, you fucking go!  Unbelievable.  He was about a 20 minute drive from the trailhead.  We got to my car and the couple would've taken  me to the emergency room, but I drove myself. I figure I had hiked out, so I could also drive myself.  I went to an emergency room in Golden.  They first hooked me up to an IV with pain killer, then they took xrays, although it was clear it was broken.  The xray technician wasn't very  good.  He kept trying to move my arm into  the position he wanted it. Guess he may not realize that broken bones hurt like hell!  The  doctor asked me if I wanted to be sedated when they reset the bone or they could just deaden my wrist via needle into the joint.  I told her I wanted to be sedated - I was so tired of being in serious pain, I didn't want to feel anything! So they told me they would give my Propofol (the Michael Jackson drug).  It was to knock me out for about 5 minutes.  There were 4 people in the room when they started the Propofol: the doctor, an EMT and 2 nurses.  The doctor and EMT reset my wrist, but the Propofol didn't knock me out.  I looked to the left as I didn't want to watch what they were doing, but I was aware and awake.  That sorta pissed me off!  The doctor said she hadn't ever seen that before, especially for a person my size.  I think I had enough pain killer in me that  it didn't hurt too terribly bad tho....thank goodness!  They put it in a splint and told me to go see an orthopaedic doctor as they thought I may need surgery.  I was at the emergency room for about 4 or so hours.   I had to have someone drive me home, because of all of the drugs they gave me, so MP came and got me (somewhat redeemed himself).  We went to a pharmacy and got Percocet.  I broke my wrist on a Sunday and saw an orthopaedic dr on Wednesday.  Thankfully, surgery wasn't required, so they put me in a hard cast.   I chose purple for the color.  I  had that cast for 2 weeks,  then went back.  They took xrays again, said it still looked pretty good, although it had shifted a little.  Still no surgery required, so they put me in another cast (I chose light blue this time) for another 2 weeks.  I got the 2nd cast off on Wednesday, March 15th and they put me in a removable brace.  I started therapy yesterday.  Lots of work to do to get my strength and full range of motion.  This thing is sore!

Post #15 - The box and The Container

A week  or so before Christmas I came home and there was a box on my front step.  It was from Eleanor.  I brought it inside the house with very mixed feelings.  I hid it in my living room, so I wouldn't have to see it.   I wasn't going to open it until Christmas.  The next day I went snowshoeing and thought about The box.  I decided I was going to write 'Return to Sender' on it as I did not want a gift from my mother.  In past years, I opened the gifts and then put them in a pile to go to Goodwill.  I  do not want physical reminders of her in my house.  This time I decided I would send it back and I wrote a note on the box - something like this:  "I do not want Christmas gifts.  The best gift you could give me is to get to know me as a person."  I put it back out for the postman to take the next day.  I was immediately afraid of the consequences.   Afraid of what I had done.  I had refused a gift from my mother....something I had never done before.  What would she say?  How would she feel?  Would I get a nasty phone call from her?  What kind of person does that?  On the other hand, I didn't want it and in my efforts to be authentic and true to myself, decided that was the right thing to do.  I still feel that way.  I have not heard anything from her.

My therapist has talked to me a lot about Radical Acceptance....accepting people for who they are, while at the same time keeping my boundaries intact.  I have found this extremely difficult to comprehend.  I can understand the concept, but in reality, that's damn hard to do.  How do you accept someone, while still saying 'no' you can't say that to me?  Or 'no' you can't send me those emails.  Or 'no' I do not want daily text messages. Or 'no' I don't have to be around someone that makes me uncomfortable.  She, my therapist, has also talked to me about The Container.  I told her that my thoughts sometimes go rampant and I have a difficult time 'controlling' them (or reining them in).  I try to figure things out, try to make sense of things, try to come to grips with things to no avail.  She told me to imagine a Container.  It be can whatever I want...a box, a jar, a suitcase.  Anything that can be closed and locked.  She told me to take 15-30 minutes a day where my brain can go crazy thinking about all of this crap and to write in my journal whatever it is I want/need to write.  And then after 15-30 minutes to put it away for the day. If thoughts come back throughout the day, then I put them in The Container and tell them I'll deal with them tomorrow.  It sounds sorta silly, but it really works.  I let my brain run rampant each day for awhile and write furiously in my journal and then put it away.  What a mental relief this is.  Along with this, she has suggested that if someone starts to irritate or bother me to say something like, 'That's just Eleanor being Eleanor.'  Or 'that's just Kevin being Kevin.' or 'that's whomever being whomever.'   It's also part of the Radical Acceptance practice.  I say this to myself....not out loud, although I may in the future if it seems warranted.  I have found this EXTREMELY helpful.  It makes what the other person is saying/doing much less personal.  I don't have to take it on, figure it out, fix it, etc, because by golly, it's not about me!  It's THEIR stuff.  I don't necessarily have to stick around and listen to it or be part of it either.  Saying those words "that's just them being them" is sooooo freeing.

Post  #14 - December 10, 2016

After the crazy election of Drump in November, I had gone to my neighbor's house the day after the election to try to understand how and why anyone could possibly have voted for Drump.  I mentioned this in an earlier  post.  Talking to this neighbor and his wife did make me feel a bit better and the husband invited me to the monthly Foothills Republican lunch.  So, I said yes.  It was this past Thursday at Pinehurst Country Club off of Wadsworth and Quincy.   My neighbor RSVPd me.  It started at 11:30 and went until 1:00.  I walked in and I was by far one of the youngest people there.  My neighbor had told me the crowd was older and mentioned something about how they all drove BMWs & Mercedes.  An older man gave me my name tag and a lady marked me off of the list and I paid my $20 (members pay $17).  I told the gentleman that gave me my name tag that I was infiltrating the group and we both laughed.  I went into the banquet/conference room which had probably 6 or so round tables that each sat about 10 people.  Nothing really happened until around noon.  People were just filing in and catching up with other people.  I felt like I did the few times I went to a Mormon church when I was dating Bruno...somewhat like a spy, knowingly attending a cult.  I felt uncomfortable and almost afraid of what I may hear / see.  My neighbor showed up and sat next to me.  No one else introduced themselves or talked to me.  Not the most welcoming group.  Even the President, Rick Enstrom, (of Enstrom Candies) said not a word to me.  As I sat there waiting for things to get started and observing the people in attendance, it dawned on me that my high school classmate, Dave, who is an overweight VP at a bank in Greeley, would fit right in.  One lady sitting at my table had little Republican elephant earrings.  After a few announcements, Mr. Enstrom asked a guy to come up and say the invocation, which was a prayer.  I wondered if the Democrats pray before their meetings and I wondered if there were any other non-'Christians' that attend this group?  I bowed my head out of respect, but if felt just like the crap I was raised with and still is heard before meals at my relatives'.  Most, maybe all?,  people said 'Amen' at the end.  I didn't.  Lunch was served, which was paltry.  For an athletic person like myself and for $20, I expected much more.  A couple of spoonfuls of sweet potato mush, even less microwaved steamed vegetables (carrots, squash, etc) and a few pieces of ham, which was very fatty (can you tell  I wasn't impressed so far?) (they also had dinner rolls, but I don't eat hardly any bread, so didn't have that).   The guest speaker was Kevin Grantham, State Senator.  This guy is the epitome what eastern CO, where I grew-up, is.  Cowboy hat, ridiculous mustache, tried to be funny.  Am I cynical from the get-go...probably.  He spoke about bringing common sense back into the state government.  The group clapped  for  him when he spoke about how with Trump as President and being in the majority, things would be easier to get done.  He mentioned that in 2 years, hopefully, a Republican governor  would  be elected to CO and then even more could be accomplished.  As I looked around, it seemed like everyone there was buying what he was saying.  I wondered if anyone else was a skeptic, like me?  There was a Q&A after and one guy did ask a question that seemed to have some thought behind it....something to do with Medicare and the Federal government rules handed down to the states.  It felt more like a rah-rah session, rather than educational.  Afterward, I talked to the guy sitting to my left.  He was very frail, thin and Asian.  I mentioned to him and to my neighbor that I wanted to go talk to Mr. Grantham, as I was also raised in eastern CO.  The guy, Ron, to my left said he used to be a bank examiner and used to go to eastern CO often back in the day. He said the people in eastern CO were good people.  I told him I disagreed.  I didn't tell him about the emotional, physical and sexual abuse, but later I wondered what characteristics of people make them 'good?'  How can you call someone good if you don't really know them?  I've had quite a few people who have met my parents say they were  the 'salt of the earth' and 'good' people, but they didn't really know them.  Then again, my relatives all know what my parents & brother have said and done to me and they still talk to them and would probably say they are 'good' people.  Where the hell does that come from?  I realize no one is completely bad or completely good (some people are probably considered evil to the core), but really?  I just do not see the enthrallment some people  have about farmers & ranchers.  Why is it that they are described as having good, old fashioned values?  And what the hell is a good, old fashioned value?  Are people who are raised in the city not honest, kind, generous?  This kind of thinking needs to be discarded.  Are blue collar  people's values so much better than white collar?  Not in my mind.  I didn't feel all  that comfortable at this luncheon, then again, I am a skeptical person and don't usually just 'buy in' to what is being dished out.  Even if everyone else attending is being 'sucked in,' I am more pragmatic.  Not an idealist at all.  In my younger years, I was 'sucked in' to the Christian way of thinking and more or less bought the story that the way I was raised and my parents were good.  Now with all I've been through, I think for myself and look and see if things 'make sense' and are 'true' for me.  If not, I don't buy it.

Post  #13 - November 26, 2016

I've had a difficult time wanting to write lately.  Can't seem to slow my body & mind down enough to sit and write.  I do, however, want to write about a dream I had back in August.  This dream happened a few nights after I had emailed & talked to Eleanor and had re-iterated the boundaries I had set with her re: text messages & emails to me that included my brother.   I don't remember a lot about the dream, except that I was in a straight jacket, so my arms were crossed and I was unable to move.    I woke-up that way....unable to move and I couldn't move for what seemed like a few minutes.  It could've been just seconds, but the feeling of being helpless (physically restrained) was traumatic.  I started crying because I couldn't move.   I didn't get back to sleep and I was very upset that day.  The world seemed off kilter, off balance and the effect on me mentally & physically was very real and disturbing.  I  find it odd that I had that dream AFTER I had emailed Eleanor and talked to her.  I had, once again, in writing and vocally, set boundaries, but the dream came after I had done so.  As a child and as an adult (part of my adult life), I wasn't physically bound in a straight jacket, however, emotionally & psychologically I was.  The beliefs (Christian, etc) of my family (mainly Eleanor) kept me from being able to speak my beliefs, opinions, & desires.  I was in an emotional & psychological straight jacket.  Unable to express.  I still feel sick  to my stomach thinking about that dream.

Related to the above is a text message I received from Eleanor two weeks ago (Nov 12th).  It was a Saturday morning around 8:00ish and I was doing some exercises and getting ready to go to QiGong in the park.  Her text said something like this:  "Mailing partnership papers to you today to sign.  Thanks.  Hope all is well."  My parents put their farm / land into a partnership and myself and my siblings are like .01% partners.  Now, this was the first communication I've received from Eleanor since August (since calling her and re-setting boundaries).  I started laughing out loud because it cracked me up that she couldn't just pickup the phone to tell me this.  At first I thought she was disinheriting me and taking me off of the partnership.  I thought about texting my sister to ask her if she had heard from Eleanor and  did she have to sign papers.  I decided that was passive aggressive and I didn't want to be that  way, so I decided to call  her.  I called her cell phone.  No answer.  I called her home phone - no answer.  So then I sent a text reply:  "Just called you.  How's the therapy going?  What are the partnership papers regarding?"  I added the therapy  question as I told her last August that she needed therapy (as I've also told her a few times in the past).  I know she hasn't gone to get therapy....it was a dig from me.  She replied saying I should call her home phone as the cell  phone doesn't work very well on the farm (I had tried the home phone - she didn't answer).  Then she said the partnership papers were to transfer my dad's ownership to her (since he passed away in 2015).  I  didn't call back.  I figured I had tried, she could see that I had tried (caller id).  When I got the papers I signed them and mailed them back.  Haven't heard from her since.  I find it amazing that she can't / won't / is unwilling / unable / to even try to see my position on all of this.  When I called my aunt and uncle to tell them I wasn't going to be joining them for Thanksgiving, I got their voice mail.  I left a message telling them that with Eleanor and Ed both planning to be there, it wouldn't be comfortable for me.  I have a feeling that not having me there was probably a relief for them (and the rest of the family) as then they don't have to figure out what to do with me....what to say, etc.

Post #12 - Just trying to breathe and Another way I coped

The election on Tuesday still hasn't sunk in.  I cannot comprehend how anyone could vote for Donald Trump.  I have been crying, sick to my stomach, unable to sleep and just trying to breathe.  I have a lot of fears.  As a friend of mine said, maybe this is good as it has shown what has been lurking just beneath the surface for so many people.  Maybe the rest of us can now see exactly how people are, what they think, their beliefs and their priorities, which will make it easier for us to know what we're dealing with.  I have to admit I've had a very difficult time even wanting to take the high road.  If Trump can be so belligerent, bigoted, racist, sexist, chauvinistic, etc, why the hell do I need to rise above?  I know, I know....don't want to stoop to his level, even tho it seems the majority of Americans are & have.  Personally, I didn't think either candidate was that great.  I don't like Obamacare, I don't like the government encroaching on my personal choices, yet to vote for the cinnamon Hitler definitely wasn't going to happen.  I've read all kinds of 'reasons' that Trump won, however, none of them (IMO) address the full reasons.  Yes, it's a rural vs urban mindset.  It's also a religious mindset, gun rights mindset and it's also people just didn't want 4 more years of Obama stuff.   I get that, however, the democratic party and the republican party failed to produce candidates that were good choices.  The last few elections I haven't voted for someone so much as I voted against someone.  Same is true with this election.  I think people voted for Trump for all kinds of different reasons and Fox news didn't help any.  The media (liberal and conservative) is partly to blame for the propaganda, the false/misleading polls and predictions (for both candidates).  I have alot of friends who are sexual assault (incest, rape, etc) survivors and Trump's actions and words has caused PTSD.  I never thought PTSD was something that I dealt with, however, the past few months (between Trump and my mom) has shown me otherwise.  I feel crazy at times trying to reconcile what happened to me (incest) and how my mom, dad, relatives etc can still support and be around my brother (invite him to Thanksgiving?  really?).  Same holds true for America and the people who voted Trump into office.  For people to support someone who thinks it's ok to grab a woman by the pussy just reiterates what my family is 'saying' to me only on a much larger scale.   I know what is true, I'm not crazy and I know all people deserve to have their bodies respected.  I will stick to that until the day I die.

Another way I coped:
When I was in college, I was there to study, not have fun!  I would sit for hours reading and re-reading chapters in my accounting text books.  Looking back on it, I read chapters many times, because I had difficulty concentrating (hmmmmm, imagine that)!  As I sat at my desk studying, I would pick at the skin around the nails on my toes, until the skin came off and they bled.  I did that to all 10 toes for many years.  I couldn't wear sandals or flipflops because I was so embarrassed.  I wanted to stop, but just couldn't.  For many people, self inflicted physical pain is a way to 'deal' (or really to not deal) with the emotional pain that is inside them.  Many people cut themselves, burn themselves, drink, overeat, under eat, take drugs, all kinds of things that numb the real pain.  Once I graduated from college and started working, I was able somehow to stop this self mutilation.  To this day, tho, I have a high tolerance for physical pain and sometimes still pull skin / hang nails, etc until I bleed.

Post #11 - The Bitch Slap of Truth

I recently read a book by Mary Karr - Lit: A Memoir.  Her life story is very different from mine, however, I have learned a few things (I love non-fiction).  For some reason, she continued to try to get from her mother the kind of relationship she needed/wanted.  I am not going to do that.  My mom turned 80 a couple of days ago.  I didn't call, email or text.  The only reason I would've is out of guilt.  I don't do things out of guilt anymore. I have also decided to start calling her by her first name, Eleanor.  This creates some separation and doesn't have the emotional tug that the word 'mom' does.  Reading this book, as well as a lot other things, has helped make it clear that I will not get the emotional support that I have craved, so it's time to let that want/desire go. The relationship the author has with her mother was frustrating to read about (also other people she writes about in her book). I just wanted to smack her.  It brought to light how damaging & fruitless the push/pull of this kind of relationship can be.  I'm not sure why it has taken me so long to see this in my own situation. Actually, I've seen it....just didn't want to believe or accept it. Children/people always have hope, I guess.  The telephone conversation I had with Eleanor in August (detailed in the Setting Boundaries post) (and the fact she hasn't called me since) sorta sealed the deal as well. You can't get blood from a turnip.

I went to The Bitch Slap Of Truth last evening with a couple of friends - first BSOT ever:  http://www.thebitchslapoftruth.com/
It was great.  The women who spoke (all 6 of them) were very good.  I would LOVE to speak at one of these events (or almost anywhere!).  During my run this morning, I was thinking of what I would talk about.....what my point would be.  I relish any chance to talk about my life, the events that have shaped it and my emotional journey towards healing & acceptance.  I find I run better (stronger, etc) when I think about powerful, uplifting things.  I have a lot of  'conversations' when I run.  I've always said that running saved my life - I firmly believe that.

Saw this posted on a friend's facebook page:

"November is here and people are busy making plans for the big Thanksgiving dinner. Families will gather around the table and share thanks with expectations that victims will hold hands with violators. This expectation is sadistic. Thanksgiving and forgiving are not synonymous. No one gets to choose if, when or why a survivor should forgive a violator. That’s not anyone’s business. Unless someone can walk the entire journey for the survivor, then they don’t get to tell the survivor how to proceed on the healing journey in a way that makes the family look “normal”. Families tend not to change. But survivors do change. The change often distances us from families and family functions. So, as we prepare to give thanks, be thankful for the change, even if it means spending the holiday away from the dysfunctional family table. You are no longer the turkey at the table."

A lot of people say a person has to forgive to move on from trauma or that you can't be truly happy or free unless you forgive.  I struggle a lot with forgiveness.  What exactly does that look like?  What do my actions look like if I say I've forgiven?  My mom and her 2nd cousin (both Christians) have told me I have to forgive.  Of course, to them, if you don't forgive you're going to hell.  What if I don't believe in heaven and hell?  Even if I did, does God REALLY send me to hell because I can't / won't / don't forgive people who continue to disrespect me?  Does forgiveness mean I should not only be around my brother and my mother, but also that I should WANT to be around them?  Does forgiveness mean I have to pretend all is ok?  I tried that route for years.....decided it wasn't worth the angst it caused me (I don't do well pretending or being 'nice'....I'd rather be authentic).  Someone mentioned that the Dalai Lama has forgiven the Chinese.  I said yes, but he's not with them physically either....he fled Tibet to save his life.  I realize he's much more enlightened than I'll ever be, so he could probably be in a Chinese prison and still forgive them.  How does forgiveness look for me tho? Can't I 'flee' my family for emotional safety?   How does a person forgive someone that doesn't acknowledge that they even did anything, let alone apologize?  What about my mother who continues to disrespect the boundaries I verbalize to her?   Holidays are the absolute worst time of year for me.  I have hated the holidays for many, many years.  I used to get quite depressed during the holidays.  That has lessened the last couple of years.  The holidays are a time when a person is 'supposed' to be excited to be around family.  ugh....for me it's extremely stressful.  I haven't done family gatherings for holidays in years.   I just got a call last evening from my aunt who is having Thanksgiving at her house (they live in C. Spgs).  She invited me.  I've been invited over the years to different relatives' houses, however, I usually either go out of town or go to friends' houses.  Any place where I don't have to 'pretend' is best for me.  I don't know if my mother will be at my aunt's house.  I imagine she will be.  I haven't talked to her since early August.  She got mad at me because I told her I didn't want daily text messages and because I told her that I didn't want to be included on group text messages & emails with my brother.  I had told her that in the past, however, she somehow 'forgot' that.  When we hung up that day, she asked me if she could still call me.  I told her yes, but she hasn't.  That is usually how she handles things....silence, rather than having a difficult conversation.  Her birthday is coming up on Nov 2nd.  Not sure if I'll call her or not.  I may just let the day go by.  She wants me to 'forgive' so that she, then, doesn't have to deal with anything anymore.  For her, I think me forgiving means I won't bring it up, I won't have feelings about it, I won't make comments, I won't set boundaries, make waves, speak publicly, etc, etc, etc.  She would just love it if I would just pretend and be 'nice'....it would make her life so much easier and she wouldn't have to deal with any emotions.   Forgiveness is a process, in my opinion.  At this point, I doubt if I will ever 'want' to be around my brother or my mother very much.

At the age of 31, I married Bruno.  He was from South Africa (SA).  I mentioned him in an earlier post.  He was charming, handsome and a pathological liar (but I didn't find that out until after the vows).  When I met him, he was a Mormon.  He had served as a Mormon missionary with the brother of a lady that I worked with at the trucking company, hence how we met.  I shared a little bit about him in an earlier post.  He was a runner, cyclist and a swimmer.  Very lean, dark hair and had a great smile.  He came to CO to visit, little did I know he really wanted to stay and would do anything to make that happen.  I had dated quite a lot and I thought I was pretty good at reading people.  This guy conned everyone tho.  My family, friends, etc.  After we got married, we lived in my apartment and he was working for a landscaper based in Parker.  He, supposedly, had been a landscaper in SA, but who really knows.  He also told me he had been in the SA military and had gotten shot in the shoulder (scar proved that, he said).  No way for me to verify that either.  I was working for a software company and I usually got home from work before he did.  This was the dark ages of answering machines and often I'd come home and there'd be a message from someone wanting to know why he hadn't showed up at their house that day to do yard work / landscaping?  I was confused by this, as he was working full-time for this other guy, so why was he contacting people on the side, making appointments with them during the week, when he was only available on weekends?   I began to trust him less and less due to him telling his personal clients that he would be at their house during the week.   After only a few short months, I wasn't trusting him at all.  He had gone to FirstBank to try to get a loan for a vehicle.  The bank wanted me to co-sign on the loan (I had banked with them for quite some time - still do), which I didn't (thank god).  They did give him a loan and he bought a pickup.  My sister had moved to Maui and I wanted to go visit, so my mom and I planned a trip out there in November (Bruno and I had gotten married in March the year before).  Bruno wanted to go really badly, however, he wasn't pulling his weight with paying bills or an income, so I told him he could pay his own way (which is what I was doing).  He didn't go.  I can't remember all of the details, but the marriage was on it's way out.  I was really stressed on the trip to Maui due to my marriage and when I got back, found out that Bruno had racked up HUGE phone bills calling family, etc  in SA.  (bills that were over $500, which I ended up paying to keep my phone connected and my credit good).   I was at work one day and called the house to check voice messages and a woman had left a message for Bruno saying she had had a good time the night before and to call her.  I was immediately sick to my stomach.  I went home and when Bruno got home I asked him about it.  I looked him straight in the eye and he denied it without flinching.  I told him we were done.  I called the woman back and told her Bruno was married and she said he hadn't said anything and that she didn't know.  He must've taken his ring off as well.  I was so livid that I was afraid I would kill him, so I went to a motel for the night, because he wouldn't leave and I wasn't about to sleep in the same house as him.  The next morning I drove back to the apartment and Bruno was loading all kinds of stuff into his truck (MY STUFF!!).  I immediately called the police and they came and he had to unload all of it.  He left and I haven't seen him since.   Over the course of the next 5-6 years, I received phone calls from numerous women he was dating (he was now in UT...back to his Mormon ways).  One wanted to know if he had a VW car when he was here in CO.  I said no.  Others wanted to know why I had kept his name....did he owe me money?  It was hilarious.  All of these women were wanting to verify what he had told them because his stories weren't stacking up.  I told all of them to just walk away from him...that he was a pathological liar.  All of them did, but one.  She married him, even after talking to me.  I think they are still married and I believe they had a child.  Just recently (a few months ago), Wells Fargo in UT called me and wanted to know if I had contact information for him.  I was NOT happy. I told them I had been divorced from him for 20 years....why were they calling me?  I asked them why they didn't just drive down the street to his house to collect money that he owed them!  I had to laugh.....he's still up to his same shenanigans.  Oh.....and not long after he moved to UT, I was at my bank and I saw his truck parked in their lot.  I immediately called the banker and asked him if Bruno was in town?  He said no, we went to UT to repossess the truck!  ha   In my opinion, honesty and integrity are the best policies....a lot less hassle.

Post #8 - Thursday, October 20, 2016 - Warning - may be TMI.

I mentioned Ralph in an earlier post.  I met him when I moved to Denver after I graduated from college.  I was still very much a born-again Christian and the college I went to was Mennonite Brethren (MB), so I started going to an MB church here in Denver.  Some of the people who went to that church also went to the college I attended (Tabor College - Hillsboro, KS).   Ralph was 4 years older than I....same age difference as my brother and I (coincidence?  probably not).   His mom was really strange and his sister (she was a bit younger than him) was probably schizophrenic....she definitely had some sort of mental disorder.  Ralph's dad was deceased.  I don't remember why or for how long.   As stated in my earlier post, I weighed around 165 lbs, so my self-esteem was really low and I honestly couldn't understand why Ralph was even interested in me.  He was good looking, athletic and an engineer.  I was still very active....running, biking, etc.  But yipes...I was fat!  :(  I don't remember how long we dated....it was quite awhile....like a year or two maybe?  Not sure.  During that time, I was certain he was really more interested in another person.  Every time I saw him talking to her I got extremely jealous.  I still have issues with jealousy.  I'm not sure where that comes from, but I do know it's very difficult to get rid of.  I don't like to admit it, but that's the truth....I have issues with jealousy.  Ralph was a 'Christian' as well, so sex was off limits.  I didn't want it anyway...was waiting until I got married, like a good little girl.  Ralph, however, had no qualms using me for his own pleasure.  He would rub himself against me until he had an orgasm and ejaculate all over me.   I, then, had to clean myself up.  WTF?  Because of my brother and the boundaries he crossed (and the way I was raised in general), I have had difficulty knowing what appropriate boundaries are and I also find that when I express that a boundary has been crossed or that I'm uncomfortable with things, the guy I'm with tends to belittle what I say and/or get upset that I have put a halt to things.   Eventually, I broke-up with Ralph.  What a relief that was.  I know I was in therapy for awhile before that happened.  What a huge step for my self-esteem.  Since then, I have tried to breakup with guys long before it gets to the point of being so uncomfortable for me (like it was with Ralph).  Six months, after I broke-up with Ralph he was engaged to be married.  I never met his wife, but dang, I feel sorry for her.  Nothing like being a good Christian wife, where the man is the head of the house.  I would have to be emotionally dead to survive that sort of existence, which is probably why I put up with it for so long.  Emotional intelligence is very important and people who don't have it aren't in my life for too long now.

P.S. I emailed Mr. MC, told him I had googled him and asked him if he was 61.  I said I was curious since his craigslist ad mentioned he was 59?   He said yes, he turned 61 on Sept. 30th.  He said he had lied by 1 year. He had posted the ad on Sept 29th, so technically he was right, but really?   Splitting hairs, I would say, but then again, a lie is a lie if it's 1 year or 1 year 364 days.   He's gone.
